About seeing a neurosurgeon

What is the difference between a neurosurgeon and a neurologist?

Both treat diseases of the brain, spine and nerves. A neurologist treats them with medicines and other non-surgical care. A neurosurgeon is trained to operate on the brain and spine, and also decides when surgery is not needed. Many patients see both.

Do I need a referral to see Dr. Kshitiz Nigam?

No. You can book directly by phone. If another doctor has seen you, bring their notes and prescriptions.

Does every spine problem need surgery?

No. Most back pain, slip disc and sciatica improve with rest, medicines, physiotherapy and time. Surgery is considered when there is nerve weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or pain that does not settle after a fair trial of treatment.

Can spine surgery cause paralysis?

This is a common fear. Serious nerve injury during spine surgery is uncommon, but no surgery is free of risk. Your surgeon should explain the specific risks for your case before you decide, and you should feel free to ask questions or take a second opinion.

Which languages are consultations in?

Hindi and English. The aim is that you and your family understand your scans, your options and the risks clearly before any decision.

Booking and your visit

How do I get an OPD appointment?

Phone +91 92039 13169. Share the patient's name, age and main problem, and the team will suggest a time.

What should I bring to the consultation?

All MRI, CT and X-ray films and reports (old and new), discharge summaries, the list of medicines you take, and any previous prescriptions. If you can, bring a family member.

Can I get advice over the phone first?

The phone line is for booking appointments. A diagnosis or treatment plan cannot be given over the phone, because it needs a proper consultation, an examination and a look at your scans.

What are the consultation fees?

Please call the clinic for current consultation fees. Costs for tests or surgery depend on the hospital and the procedure, and will be explained before any decision.

Emergencies

What should I do after a head injury?

If the person is drowsy, confused, vomiting repeatedly, has a fit, weakness, a severe headache, or bleeding from the nose or ears, call 108 or 112 and go to the nearest emergency department straight away. Do not move the neck if a spine injury is possible.

Is the clinic open for emergencies?

The clinic runs scheduled OPD hours. For emergencies, go to the nearest hospital emergency department or call 108 or 112. Do not wait for a clinic appointment.
